It is reported that the average pass rate for Ontario’s driver’s license road test is 69%.

According to CBC reports, Ontario’s driving test should be unified. No matter which test site, the test content is the same driving skills. However, the actual situation shows that the passing rate of each examination center varies greatly. The most common situation is that many candidates in the Toronto area failed the road test once or twice, so they went to a remote test center to take the road test, and finally passed the road test and obtained their driver’s license.

Driving instructors and road safety groups have said the government should reform road tests and review test routes.

In an interview with CBC, a driving instructor said that the reason why it is difficult to pass the road test in the Greater Toronto Area or urban area is because the roads are busy and drivers are not very considerate of others. However, because it is easier to take the test in rural test centers, when out-of-town candidates go to the road test, in many cases they will fail because they are not familiar with the route. At the same time, they have to pay an extra fee to the coach.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation said in an email to CBC that Ontario’s driver’s license test is “the most stringent in North America.” The rules and scoring criteria used by examiners in road tests are based on the Highway Traffic Act. Examiners evaluate a driver’s ability to drive safely based on a set of road test standards that are the same for all drivers.

“Examiners do not have the discretion to make assessments outside of these standards.”

“All road test appointments are randomly assigned to examiners and any attempt to bribe an examiner will result in the immediate termination of the road test.”

In addition, Ontario has a website that lists government-approved driving schools .

The Ontario government also stated that all G-plate road test routes at DriveTest locations have been reviewed in January 2022 and approved by the Ministry of Transportation. Some drivers fail the test either because they don’t know how to drive, because they make many mistakes, or because they do something dangerous.

As for how to improve the passing rate, the coach said that no matter which test center you choose, you need to do enough homework when choosing a coach and driving school, rather than looking for the cheapest or the most advertised. Additionally, people should not just focus on passing the test, but on driving safely and avoiding dangerous situations and crashes.
