Buffalo Spicy Chicken Wings first appeared in 1935 at the Anchor Bar near North Avenue on Buffalo’s main shopping street. Teressa Bellissimo, unprepared for the large crowd of her son Dominic and his friends, simply drizzled sauce and seasoning on fried chicken wings, which unexpectedly became a hit—before this, chicken wings were considered inferior, either used for soup or thrown away.

Anchor Bar sells 36,000 pounds of chicken wings every month. The dish is known as Buffalo wings in other parts of the United States, but in the area around Buffalo and much of the Northeast, it is simply called chicken wings (or wings).

That year, our family of four crossed the border to Buffalo for a trip. First, we visited the warships on the lake, then we strolled around City Hall, and finally, we went to Anchor Bar, located on Buffalo’s main shopping street near North Avenue. In the evening, the parking lot outside was packed; it was difficult to find a spot. Inside, there was an exaggerated statue of Teressa Bellissimo standing at the entrance. The walls inside were covered with all sorts of license plates, and motorcycles were parked near the roof. The bar was overflowing with people.

While waiting for my food outside, we bumped into a Chinese man from Pittsburgh. Since my son was playing hockey, we naturally started talking about Pittsburgh Penguins player Sidney Crosby. During our conversation, he mentioned watching Crosby play and noting that Crosby was very mindful of his safety amidst the intense competition and collisions, avoiding any overly aggressive moves. This is understandable; physical condition is an athlete’s capital. As for the 2005 conflict, I only learned about that later. At the time, Sidney Crosby, considered a rising star, admitted to reporters before a game against the Buffalo Sabres that he looked down on Buffalo wings, which sparked a heated conflict between the two teams.

Half an hour later, the food arrived, a large plateful. It tasted sour, not to our liking, which made us wonder why so many people enjoyed it. It seems that everyone has different tastes, which is why the world is so colorful and diverse.
