Founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartzs, a Jewish immigrant from Romania, Schwartz’s Deli has remained in the same location for decades. Using the most traditional methods and high-quality locally produced herbs and spices, the meat is marinated for 10 days using a family secret recipe, then smoked for a whole day and slowly steamed for another day. Finally, it is hand-sliced into thin slices. As a result, the smoked meat at this shop is preservative-free and is freshly cooked every day. You can see long queues outside the shop from afar.

Actually, Montreal should have had two famous shops, but I heard that one of them has closed down, so the remaining one is basically monopolizing the market! When I arrived, there was already a queue. I saw that it had two shops. After asking, I learned that one was mainly for dine-in and the other was for takeout. Although the takeout shop also had a few seats, it was more like a fast food style. You had to order your takeout food and then find a seat in the seating area. There were very few seats. However, the dine-in shop would put the sandwiches on a plate. So if you want to be quick, you can consider ordering takeout
The takeaway shop is a long and narrow space. We were happy to go in since there was no line at the door, but it turned out that everyone was queuing inside. We were basically at the very back of the line. If you come at a peak time, it is common to wait for more than 30 minutes. This time we waited for about 10 minutes. Fortunately, the food was served very quickly. There were many pre-packaged smoked meat sandwiches on the counter. If you only order smoked meat sandwiches and not poutine, it will be much faster
The bacon is made from brisket, which is a cut of lean meat with some fat so it’s not dry. You can also add yellow mustard or pickle sauce for a richer flavor. Each sandwich is also packed with plenty of meat, making it a very satisfying meal for everyone.
