Sexual satisfaction is not linked to the frequency of intercourse. The older women get, the more they enjoy it, while they tend to have sex less often. Will this silence the laboratories that claim 45% of women suffer from libido disorders? © Hugrakka, Flickr, CC BY-ND 2.0

Women’s sexual satisfaction increases with age, according to American researchers. Among those still sexually active, two-thirds experience orgasm almost every time.
Some laboratories claim that half of all women suffer from sexual dysfunction and emphasize the urgent need to develop a drug to boost libido . However, when looking at older women, researchers from the University of California, supported by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs , demonstrate in the American Journal of Medicine that there is no reason to worry about female pleasure after menopause.
Indeed, based on a questionnaire, a cohort of 806 women followed for about forty years in the United States were tested on their sexuality , down to the most intimate details. The frequency of sexual intercourse, pain during intercourse, and the frequency of… were thus evaluated.orgasmSexual desire , level of satisfaction, in addition to which information concerning lubrication of the genital tract or the use ofhormonesto stimulate thelibidohave also been compiled.
With an average age of 67, 63% of these women are now menopausal. Half had sexual intercourse in the four weeks preceding the questionnaire. The study shows that 40% of participants have never or very little sexual desire, including a third of the women who are still sexually active. Among those who still have regular sexual activity, 67% experience orgasm every time or almost every time. This applies to 47.5% of the older women . Conversely, the youngest women have the highest desire, but this does not necessarily translate into pleasure, as they are the most dissatisfied.

Less practice, but more enjoyment as time goes by
However, the frequency of sexual activity decreases over time, and the average age of sexually active women is 59, while it is around 75 for others. Desire is not the only reason for engaging in sexual activity. Some participants mentioned wanting to maintain harmony in their relationship or to assert their self-esteem.
However, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. ” In this study, sexual activity isn’t always necessary for sexual satisfaction ,” explains Susan Trompeter, the study’s lead author. ” Women who are no longer sexually active can find pleasure through masturbation ,” meaning that a lack of sexual activity doesn’t always equate to a loss of pleasure.
Furthermore, it turns out that emotional closeness andphysicalIntimacy with a partner can surpass orgasm , and therefore, one shouldn’t necessarily focus on pleasure to measure the fulfillment of a woman’s sex life. However, this type of study, based on self-reporting, should always be taken with a grain of salt, especially on such topics, because respondents say what they want to say. And sometimes, even with the best intentions, they don’t tell the whole truth…
